Self-harm and Suicide Prevention Collaborative - whakawhanaungatanga

Since 2005 The New Zealand Guidelines Group has been funded by the Ministry of Health to run a major new quality improvement project, working with Emergency Departments, Mental Health and Maori Health Services.

A Project for Emergency Departments, Maori Health and Mental Health Services

The New Zealand Guidelines Group has been commissioned by the Ministry of Health to run an innovative multi-year project designed to implement the guidelines for the Assessment and Management of People at Risk of Suicide.

Aims of the Implementation Project
The aim of this project is to ensure that people at risk of suicide and self-harm get timely and appropriate care that builds on the Guideline.

The three main objectives of the project are to:

  1. work with emergency departments (EDs), Mäori health and mental health services to improve emergency mental health care for the prevention of suicide and self-harm
  2. promote collaboration within services and amongst clinicians to achieve and sustain change
  3. contribute to the knowledge base regarding methodologies needed for the successful implementation of guidelines.

The project management team and advisory group have formed their own collaboration of health professionals, Maori, Pacific, consumers and NGO's with a strong interest in suicide prevention.

Outcomes of Phase One from March 2006 until Feb 2007 including 10 DHBs resulted in:

  • Decreased stigmas towards people at risk of suicide
  • Increased collaboration between EDs, Mental Health, Maori Health/Mental Health Services
  • Increased cultural awareness
  • Decreased waiting times
  • An increase in the number of initial risk assessments from 47% and 72%
  • An increase in the number of comprehensive mental health assessments from 42% to 70% in the first two quarters
  • An Increase in the provision of discharge plans to Consumers from 3% to 35%

DHBs from across New Zealand are part of the Collaborative

 14 DHBs are participating in the collaborative.  They are:

  • Northland DHB
  • Waitemata DHB
  • Counties Manukau DHB
  • Bay of Plenty DHB
  • Waikato DHB
  • Tairawhiti DHB
  • Hawkes Bay DHB
  • Lakes District DHB
  • MidCentral DHB
  • Taranaki DHB
  • Wairarapa DHB
  • Hutt Valley DHB
  • Southland DHB
  • Capital & Coast DHB

Phase Two has commenced.  Nine out of the 10 previously particpating DHBs have joined again, four new DHBs have joined.
