Hormone Replacement Therapy
Results from the estrogen-only arm (conjugated equine estrogen) of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study have just reported the following results that provide important new information for the new update of the HRT Guideline:1
  1. Use of ERT increases the risk of stroke. In postmenopausal women aged 50 to 79 years, the estimated absolute risk of stroke is 32 cases per 10,000 women per year in non-users of ERT compared to 44 cases per 10,000 women per year in users of ERT (averaged over 5 ½ years).
  2. Use of ERT decreases the risk of hip fracture. In postmenopausal women aged 50 to 79 years, the estimated absolute risk of hip fracture is 17 per 10,000 women per year in non-users of ERT compared to 11 per 10,000 women per year in users of ERT.
  3. There is no evidence of an increased or decreased risk of coronary heart disease in ERT users compared to non-users.
  4. A possible (non significant) reduction in breast cancer risk in ERT users needs further investigation.
